British agent Alec Leamas is recalled from West Berlin after the death of one of his operatives. He is removed from duty and left “in the cold”, falling into a jobless, alcohol-fueled depression and used as a bait for Communist secret agents. A defining Cold War-era political spy thriller, based on the 1963 John le Carré novel of the same name.
Richard Burton is sublime in the lead role in one of his greatest performances.
Grim and tantalizing, a well directed and orchestrated thriller film which never strays from reality and shows a different and dark side of espionage – one often masked in films like the James Bond series.
Nominated for two Academy Awards in 1965.
